Comprehensive Propane Services For More That 80 Years

Our History, by Brian Donahue

Donahue Gas was started back in 1938 when my grandfather starting selling “F cylinders”, the forerunner of a 20# cylinders, off of his front porch.  I think of that every time I swap out a cylinder from our exchange cabinet in front of our store.  My grandfather passed away in 1947 leaving my Uncle Tom, more commonly referred to as “Ted” and my father Jim and their brother Pat to take over the family business.  Ted just recently returned from the Second World War and Jim who unbeknownst to him was getting ready to get drafted for the Korean War took over the reins of Home Supply Company in 1947 which would become the present day Donahue Gas.  We were formed in Madison County Indiana in Anderson.  In the 1950’s and 1960’s Anderson was a boom town with factories galore and employment at an all-time high.  Anderson had one of the highest per capita income in the nation.  Boy how times change, and Donahue Gas has changed along with it.  You have to change with the times or you won’t survive.

Jim and Ted worked in the business until the 1980’s and I joined the company in 1989 with two of my brothers Joe and David Donahue.  Over the years we have been fortunate to incorporate other propane businesses within ours and the mergers have helped to add to the longevity of our company.  Within the last 2 years McCoy’s Lp Gas and Shrock’s Dri Gas have entrusted their company legacies with ours and the mergers have been very beneficial for all parties.  Operating a family business definitely has its challenges and these mergers have allowed us to maintain the family run business philosophy for the customers of all businesses combined.  There has been quite the consolidation of propane companies over the years and as of late the pace seems to be accelerating with a new generation of owners reaching the retirement age.  It has been a very satisfying experience to be able to help owners enjoy the fruits of their labor at retirement while giving them the satisfaction of knowing that their customers will be cared for in the same manner which they carried forth in their family owned businesses.

Over the years there are many changes and currently Joe Donahue is a sales manager for Manchester Tank and David Donahue is the director of code compliance and education for the North Carolina Propane Gas Association.  I guess once a propane nerd, always a propane nerd.  Over the years we have all been involved with the Indiana Propane Gas Association.  My father Jim Donahue was past president,  David is a past president and I am currently the treasurer of the IPGA.  Joe Donahue moved to Arizona where he served as president of the Arizona Propane Gas Association.  We all felt and feel that our associations are any extremely valuable part of not only our industry but for our own business as well.  The IPGA allows us to stay informed and ahead of the curve on changes affecting our industry, and they are coming fast and furious these days.
